![]() ![]() Seriously, the best part of the job is meeting young readers. I get to wear pajamas and make up stories all day. ![]() What’s your favorite part about being a writer?.It’s waiting for you on a bookshelf nearby. So if you haven’t found it yet, keep reading. The important thing is that when you find The Right Book-the book that makes you laugh or cry or understand the world a little better-you’ll see how reading can change your life. For you, it may be a graphic novel, or a picture book, or a non-fiction title, or a funny series. For me, The Right Book was a beautiful novel called Charlotte’s Web. Finding The Right Book is like searching for a good friend. That’s because I hadn’t found (drum roll, please) The Right Book. I have a confession to make that just may shock you: When I was young, I really, really, REALLY didn’t like to read.Ĭrazy, I know. And being a writer was a dream of mine for a long time. ![]() Did you always know you were going to be a writer?.If you’re wondering how long I’ve been a published author, the answer is… 25 years? 30? Long enough to know that this is the best job in the world, and that I wouldn’t trade it for anything else. To me, anyone who has written a story is a writer! I wrote my first story when I was in fourth grade, so I’ve been a writer since then. ![]() ![]() The Dovekeepers (2011) traced four women caught in the fall of Masada Incantation (2006), written for young adult readers, was a brief, grim and gripping account of a converso family in the Inquisition in the 1400s and The Marriage of Opposites (2015), the story of the painter Camille Pissarro and his strong-willed mother, painted a vivid and surprising picture of 19th-century Jewish life on the island of St. ![]() In recent years, Hoffman has dipped with increasing frequency into Jewish history. Her Oprah book, Here on Earth (1997), is a sly retelling of Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights in which the Cathy character doesn’t die young but survives to pick up where her doomed romance with Heathcliff left off. Her highest-profile title is probably still the 1995 Practical Magic, made into a 1998 movie starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman, about a couple of witch sisters trying to live normal lives and avoid bringing doom on the men who love them. The popular author of 37 previous books, including numerous bestsellers and an Oprah’s Book Club selection, is best known for her romance-filled tales of witches, spells and cold New England winters, as well as novels that evoke her own gritty working-class youth in 1950s Long Island. ![]() ![]() ![]() Alice Hoffman’s loyal readers-of whom there are a great, great many-may be surprised to learn she’s written a Holocaust novel. ![]() ![]() ![]() Mark Lockyer as the Egyptian prosecutor is all flighty jokiness while Susan Lynch endows his opponent with a mixture of fury and despair. Anthony Ward's design surrounds the action with a circular screen full of technicolour urban images. These are matters rarely debated on the London stage and Goold's production gives full weight to Guirgis's rich text. Guirgis is making a serious point: that, if betrayal is the ultimate sin, then forgiveness is the ultimate sign of grace. Simon the Zealot, for instance, recalls that, after the riot at the Temple, Jesus was "like I'm going to die soon so let's just chill". What gives the play its life is that Guirgis handles big issues with comic flair. On the one hand, we are told that Judas, played by Joseph Mawles, was Jesus's alter ego and an instrument of his divine mission: on the other that Judas was an impossibly arrogant figure who made God in his own image. God's perfect love is pitted against His rightful justice: the spirit of the New Testament against the Old. ![]() Judas's counsel gets to the nub of the matter when she quotes the Hegelian notion that within every idea is contained its contradiction and what follows is an often hilarious batting forth of thesis and antithesis. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The authors of this new, entirely original book also hide behind a pseudonym: ‘Cato the Younger’, the great-grandson of Cato, who equally warned of the consequences of foolish decisions by the leaders of Rome. The 1940 edition pointed the finger of blame at fifteen ‘guilty’ men who had failed to prepare Britain for the inevitable war with Germany. The best known of the three writers was Michael Foot, the future Labour leader. It was written under the pseudonym ‘Cato’, and so secret were the identities of the eminent authors that they were even able to review the book themselves without being discovered. Guilty Men, published in 1940, was the great polemical bestseller of the mid-twentieth century. Published to mark the first anniversary of Brexit, two prominent political and social commentators lambast the political figures who have betrayed the European cause. ![]() ![]() It deals with the two great themes of the retribution of crime and the inheritance of evil and here again a parallel may be found between the assertions of the justice of God by Æschylus and by the Hebrew prophet Ezekiel. ![]() "The Oresteia" is one of the supreme productions of all literature. Like other writers of his time, he acted in his own plays, and trained the chorus in their dances and songs and he did much to give impressiveness to the performances by his development of the accessories of scene and costume on the stage. Before him tragedy had consisted of the chorus and one actor and by introducing a second actor, expanding the dramatic dialogue thus made possible, and reducing the lyrical parts, he practically created Greek tragedy as we understand it. The importance of Æschylus in the development of the drama is immense. ![]() ![]() ![]() With only a handful of people he can trust - including a beautiful journalist - it’s all Will can do just to survive, elude exposure and protect those he loves long enough to use his knowledge to save the world.ĭelivering fast-paced adventure on a global scale as well as sharp-witted satire on our concepts of power and faith, Marvel writer Charles Soule’s audacious debut novel takes readers on a rollicking ride where it’s impossible to predict what will happen next. He is the author of the novels ANYONE and THE ORACLE YEAR, published by HarperCollins Harper Perennial imprint, as well as LIGHT OF THE JEDI, launch title for STAR WARS:THE HIGH REPUBLIC. Legions of cyber spies are unleashed to hack the Site - as it has come to be called - and the best man hunters money can buy are deployed not only to unmask the Oracle but to take him out of the game entirely. Stints on the East Coast followed, before settling in New York (apparently) for the long haul. ![]() He’s also making high-powered enemies, from the president of the United States and a nationally prominent televangelist to a septuagenarian female assassin and a warlord with a nuclear missile. In no time, global corporations are offering him millions for exclusive access, eager to profit from his prophecies. ![]() Protecting his anonymity by calling himself the Oracle, he sets up a heavily guarded website with the help of his friend Hamza to announce his revelations. So when an unassuming Manhattan bassist named Will Dando awakens from a dream one morning with 108 predictions about the future in his head, he rapidly finds himself the most powerful man in the world. ![]() ![]() ![]() Written by an infantryman who served as both an enlisted man and an officer in the military after the war, Youth in Asia is a realistic account of five men of the 173rd Airborne Brigade separated from their platoon in the darkness of a jungle night while armed with little more than M16s, a M60 machine gun, Claymore mines, and a desperate desire to survive. ![]() Youth In Asia relives the friendships, loyalties and betrayals of young men in combat, and for those that survive, the memories they carried home.
